1. A Picture of Righteousness

    Tuesday March 19th 2013 * St. Joseph
    A Picture of Righteousness
    Readings of the day: 2 Samuel 7:4-5, 12-14, 16 * Psalm 89:2-5, 27, 29 * Romans 4:13, 16-18, 22 * Matthew 1:16, 18-21, 24

    Joseph … was a righteous man … Matthew 1:19

    In his teaching, Jesus has a lot to say about being righteous – not self-righteous, of course, but righteous in the sense of doing what is right, being right with God and other people. It is notable that in Matthew’s Gospel the only person besides Jesus described as righteous is Joseph, his foster father. And the situation in which Joseph showed his righteousness is very interesting.

    When Mary is discovered to be pregnant during their engagement, Joseph – perhaps guided by his interpretation of the Mosaic law –thinks that he should not proceed with the marriage. But he looks for a way to follow the law that will do Mary no harm. He seeks to combine obedience to God with compassion to his fiancee.

    Joseph’s situation was unique. But at one time or another all of us encounter situations and relationships where it is crucial not only to hold fast to God’s law but also to show compassion. At such times it is good to remember Joseph.

    Happy Feast Day to those who have St. Joseph as the Patron Saint.

    Holy Day of Obligation – 1st Day of Advent

    DECEMBER
    02
    Date :: Sunday, Dec 2

    The word Advent derives from the Latin word meaning coming. The Lord is coming. We may reflect that every year at this time we celebrate his coming , so that in a sense we can lose the feeling of expectancy and joyful anticipation, because at the end of the season, everything seems to return to pretty much the same routine. If that is the case, then our preparation may have been lacking and we have therefore been robbed of much of the true meaning of this season.

    During Advent we recall the history of God’s people and reflect on how the prophecies and promises of the Old Testament were fulfilled. This gives us a background for the present. Today we can reflect on the past track record of God and so begin to understand what it means to us now for the sake of what is to come, in our own future and that of our world.
